Elgar festival facing major budget cuts

Vaseline 4 weeks ago

An arts festival celebrating the work of Edward Elgar is having to make changes to cope with an expected 40% drop in funding.

Kenneth Woods, artistic director of the Elgar Festival in Worcester, said it has made “huge cuts in artistic expenditure” this year.

He warned that as costs continue to rise, this is “quite a gap that we need to fill”.

Arts Council England said it recognizes the importance of this festival and is providing £30,000 for this year.

Mr Woods said: “We are now at the stage where we need to ensure that the things that are still there are viable.”

He also said it was important “we emerge from the festival in a strong enough position to continue our work over the next twelve months”.
