From June 2024, the German government will introduce an ‘opportunity card’ to enable skilled job seekers to stay in Germany and look for work. The Opportunity Card makes it easier for candidates to find a job in Germany. Everything you need to know about this card:

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must have recognized qualifications from their home country, such as a university degree or a professional qualification of at least two years’ duration.

Basic proficiency in German (A1 CEFR) or English (B2 CEFR).

Score a minimum of six points on a points-based system, which evaluates factors such as recognition of qualifications, language skills, professional experience, age, ties to Germany and potential employment opportunities for your spouse or partner.

Advantages of the Opportunity Card:

Legal residence and job search in Germany without the need for a permanent employment contract.

Participation in a trial job or part-time job for a maximum of 20 hours per week.

Extension of the card for another two years upon obtaining a job offer, but without the necessary residence permit.

Faster and more efficient process compared to traditional recognition methods.

How to apply:

Apply for the Opportunity Card at the German diplomatic mission in your home country or at the relevant local immigration office if you are already in Germany.

Duration and conditions:

The Opportunity Card is issued for a maximum of one year.

Holders must be able to provide for their livelihood during this period.

There is room for trial work or part-time work for a maximum of 20 hours per week.

Extension possible for a further two years if eligible employment is secured.

By offering an easier route for applicants into the country, Germany aims to attract and retain skilled workers with the launch of the Opportunity Card.
