Danny Rohl has dropped a big hint over his future at Sheffield Wednesday amid ties with Sunderland

Danny Rohl has hinted at his future after reports linking him with a move away from Sheffield Wednesday.

Danny Rohl joined Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023 after leaving his role as assistant manager of the German national team.

Although the Owls are still a safety point at the bottom of the Championship, the 34-year-old has done a fantastic job and is much loved at Hillsborough.

Fans are keen for Rohl to stay beyond this summer, but his future is in doubt and he could leave quickly if they are relegated.

Rohl’s impressive performance on Wednesday will certainly not go unnoticed and he is likely to attract interest from the Championship and his native Germany, while reports in recent months have claimed that one club is interested in Sunderland.

The Black Cats are looking for a new permanent manager this summer and believe Rohl fits their mold perfectly.

Danny Rohl admits: ‘You never know what will happen’

The German has said very little about his future and supporters are still hopeful he will if they can stay, but whether that happens could depend on the final day – when they travel to Sunderland.

However, Rohl has now dropped a hint, with the coach speaking to The Times about his family remaining in Germany during his time with the Owls.

“I think it’s been hard for my kids,” he said. “My goal is to bring them here. But we got a house in Southampton and soon after we moved to Munich. You never know what’s going to happen in football.”

Is the German on his way to Sunderland?

Every football manager will know that he cannot predict what will happen, and every fan will understand that too.

However, Rohl’s reluctance to take his family this season has suggested he could be hitting the road this summer.

There is no chance of him being fired, so if he was determined to stay in Hillsborough for another year, he would certainly have settled in the city.

Although the fact that they remain in Germany could also indicate that he may return to his home country, as a move to Sunderland wouldn’t exactly require much upheaval for his family if they had already moved to Sheffield.

However, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he didn’t want to make it in League One, so Sheffield Wednesday’s only real option is to stay up and hope that the fans and the players’ relationship with Rohl can entice him to stay at the club.
