Where is ‘Ghosts’ filmed on CBS? (US version)

Vaseline 4 weeks ago

Of all the shows returning in 2024, CBS’ hit sitcom is one of the most anticipated ghosts, which started its third season on Thursday, February 15.

Based on the British series of the same name, the American version of Ghosts Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar play Sam and Jay, a married couple who escape city life to own a sprawling bed-and-breakfast tucked away in the countryside of New York’s Hudson Valley.

There’s only one problem. In addition to the fact that almost everything in Woodstone Mansion, which Sam inherited from a great aunt, is in dire need of repairs, the house is infested with ghosts. After falling down the stairs, Sam gains the ability to see ghosts, and Sam and Jay’s lives will never be the same.

Considering that we like to see an old country house restored to its former glory, but also idyllic small towns in New York or elsewhere, this snappy comedy is our kind of show. But is the house where it was filmed real?

The American version of Ghosts is filmed in… Canada

Although CBS Ghosts Set in Upstate New York and weaving local references to the area, filming takes place on a soundstage in Montreal, Quebec and the surrounding area.

“It’s no secret that we (the cast) all love each other, and we’re grateful for that because we’re so close together, not just as characters trapped in this house forever, but as a bunch of actors who do everything had to leave our own lives,” said Rebecca Wisocky, who plays Hetty Rural life. “We’re filming the show in Montreal, so we’re all sitting there together.”

According to a fan site, the house that serves as the stone exterior of Woodstone Mansion is about an hour’s drive from Montreal and was built by a Belgian family in the 1940s. If you look terribly If you look at an aerial photo of that location on Reddit and an exterior behind-the-scenes photo on Instagram by McIver, you can see architectural details that match.

During production of season 2 in July 2022, a local news source reported that the Ghosts cast and crew were filming at Morgan Arboretum in the area of Montreal known as West Island.

Ghosts Fan trivia: Not a single scene from CBS Ghosts Season 3 was filmed away from the soundstage. The 2023 writers and actors strikes pushed production into winter, when it is very cold in Montreal, according to Wisocky:

“They rebuilt the entire exterior facade of the country house. So when you see us in the episode where we free Flower from the well (Season 3, Episode 8), it’s all on a sound stage, and it’s just so beautifully done and a testament to the talent of our crew,” said the actress.

The Victorian interior of Woodstone Mansion is modeled after a house in California

During the day Entertainment tonight’s behind-the-scenes tour of the Ghosts Set in 2022, Ambudkar, who plays Jay, revealed that the pilot episode was filmed in a real house in LA, near the University of Southern California. When the pilot was picked up, the interior of the house was painstakingly recreated on a soundstage in Montreal for the filming of the remainder of the series. The set also includes many genuine antiques.

Speaking about the complexity of the set design, Wisocky shared rural life, “I like to think of that house as the eleventh main character in our show, and it has so many stories. So many things happen in those walls and on that land. And our production designer, Zoë Sakellaropoulo, is just the genius. It is the most detailed and beautiful set I have ever worked on.”

The LA house that the Ghosts The set is modeled after the film that has previously appeared on TV and in films To distract, including the 1960s TV series Batman, the ABC series Alias, And the 2011 film Bridesmaids.

However, one part of the LA house was not replicated for the Montreal set: the facade. The exterior of the LA house is brick, while the Canadian facade is stone. The pilot was reportedly later edited to swap the exterior of the house, so streaming viewers rewatching the pilot episode on Paramount+ won’t notice the location change, except for a few brief moments. (See the Hooked on Houses blog post for a comparison of the original and current facade.)

Scenes where Sam and Jay open the front door to greet guests, or their nosy neighbors, the Farnsbys (Kathryn Greenwood and Mark Linn-Baker, pictured below), don’t require the cast to leave. AND’From the set tour, it appears that the stone arch is part of the set, and that the outdoor backdrop may look realistic, but is actually a (huge!) curtain.

Scene after scene, it’s virtually impossible to tell that the set isn’t a real house. The rustic kitchen, complete with sink and farm table, looks like it belongs in a well-loved and well-weathered home. (By the way, in the kitchen scene below, the one with the arrow is Pete, a scout troop leader who Richie Moriarty played. His ghost has been in Woodstone since an unfortunate archery accident in the ’80s.)

The bedrooms remind us of previous stays in B&Bs with creaking floors. In the future, we’ll just tell ourselves that any suspected ghost in such a situation is Alberta, the sassy but endearing Prohibition-era lounge singer (Danielle Pinnock).

The historic Baker Mansion in Pennsylvania inspired CBS Ghosts executive producer Joe Port

There is a piece of CBS Ghosts set trivia not related to California or Montreal, but rather Pennsylvania. The series was developed by writers/executive producers Joe Port and Joe Wiseman. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Port grew up in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and used to sled down the hill at the 19th century Baker Mansion on snowy days.

As Port reimagined the British show in an American setting, his memories of the old house inspired him. In a nod to his Victorian muse, he named two characters after the original owners of Baker Mansion, Elias and Hetty Baker (other than the names, there is no similarity to the characters). In ghosts, the fictional Hetty is played by Wisocky, who also happens to be born in Pennsylvania, while the ghost of her husband Elias occasionally appears in the form of actor Matt Walsh.

You can visit the house from Ghosts?

Neither California house appeared in the American version of the Ghosts pilot, nor the Quebec home that serves as the stone exterior of Woodstone Mansion, appears to be open to the public. But you can take a tour of Baker Mansion in Altoona, Pennsylvania, which although not a filming location, was an inspiration for the American version of the series. It is open for docent-led tours from Memorial Day weekend through mid-December.

If you’re a fan of the original BBC Ghosts and plan a trip across the pond, you can tour Britain Ghosts home: West Horsley Place in Surrey.
