New YorkA man has died after setting himself on fire in a park across from the New York courthouse during the ongoing criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, according to reports. The man died in hospital from his injuries, several American media reported based on police sources.

The man, reportedly from Florida, distributed conspiracy theory pamphlets throughout the park, witnesses said.

He poured liquid on himself and set himself on fire, according to unanimous reports from several media outlets, including the New York Times and CNN.

Bystanders had shouted and tried to help, the reports said. After a short time, police officers arrived and extinguished the flames. He was initially taken to hospital by ambulance. His motives remain unclear.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital, NBC reported, citing police, who did not say exactly what time he died.

The incident took place in Collect Pond Park, directly across from the courthouse where Trump’s criminal trial is currently taking place.

The courthouse is extensively cordoned off and there are numerous police officers on duty at all times. Around it are dozens of media representatives with cameras and broadcast vans.

Trump opponents and supporters are allowed to gather for demonstrations in the park, but so far only a few have done so on the days of the trial. The site is surrounded by barricades, but there are also open entrances. (IANS)
