Two Japan Self-Defense Force helicopters crashed into the sea during an exercise, killing at least one of eight people on board, the agencies said, citing Japanese media.

SH-60 helicopters last night conducted anti-submarine warfare exercises off the southern coast of central Japan, Japanese media reported.

The search for the missing crew members continues.

Japanese Defense Minister Kihara Minoru said at a news conference that the two helicopters probably collided.

The US Ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, announced on the social network X that Japan can count on the United States to carry out the search for the missing persons.
