Delhi Police on Sunday arrested the prime suspect in the assault and murder of a 36-year-old taxi driver in a road rage incident near Red Fort following a gunfight in North Delhi’s Kotwali.

Earlier this week the Delhi Police arrested three other suspects – Anita, 28, her stepbrother Sajid, 19, and Salman, 24 – for Shakib’s murder on Monday evening.

Manoj Kumar Meena, DCP (North), said Firoz, who was shot at, was suspected of firing a gun and killing Shakib near the Red Fort and they were looking for him.

On April 21, a police team reached Wazirabad after receiving information about Firoz’s whereabouts. According to an informant’s tip, he was on foot.

“When he was asked to surrender, he fired a shot at the police party and the police team also fired back in self-defense. The suspect was injured in his left leg. He was immediately shifted to Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital for medical attention,” Meena said.

Forensic examination has been conducted at the spot and a case has been filed under the Arms Act and section of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) relating to attempt to murder, a police officer said.

The officer said Firoz is involved in 11 cases in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, two of which involve robbery and murder. The officer said he was also involved in an attempt to murder case in Sonia Vihar in 2015.

According to the officer, Firoz has been involved in crimes since 2008 and has been arrested 11 times, most of which are still being tried.

On his way home, Shakib’s car hit an e-rickshaw, leading to a fight between him and three passers-by. As the fight escalated, Shakib was dragged from his WagonR, attacked and stabbed before being shot. He succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.
