Man United are showing interest in signing free agent defender Nacho Fernandez

Man United could look to Nacho Fernandez to solve their defensive problems this summer.

Manchester United will undoubtedly sign at least one defender this summer. The Old Trafford side have struggled for any kind of consistency this season, making Erik ten Hag’s job much more difficult.

Lisandro Martinez’s injury problems were the biggest problem, while Raphael Varane was also injured for too long. Then you have Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans. All three have an uncertain future at the club.

Ten Hag is undoubtedly weighing all possible options, with a new name throwing Fichajes into the mix; Nacho Fernandez.

According to their information, the Spaniard has made the decision not to renew his contract with Real Madrid next summer. Therefore, he will be a free agent.

United are said to be one of the few clubs keen to sign Nacho, with Inter Milan and Juventus also interested.

According to Fichajes, the experienced centre-back has emerged as an ‘attractive’ option for United, with Varane’s departure from Old Trafford ‘imminent’.

The Reds value Nacho’s versatility as he can also play as a full-back, while his ‘experience’ could be of ‘great value’ to this young United team.

Nacho would undoubtedly bring some quality and consistency to a team that really needs it. However, I fear that a lack of Champions League football could make it difficult for the defender to choose United over his other possible options.

I would also be careful about paying too much in terms of weekly wages. Nacho could go the Casemiro/Varane route in that regard. I would avoid a long-term contract if I were INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
