Surеsh Raina, nicknamed ‘Chinna Thala’ by CSK fans and played a crucial role in making the Chennai Super Kings a strong team in the IPL. He joined CSK in 2008 from MS Dhoni and remained with the team until he retired in 2021. Raina scored 5528 runs in 205 matches and contributed to 4 IPL wins for CSK. He was also there when CSK won two Champions League titles.

Talking about a crucial match in IPL 2014 against PBKS, Raina recalled how Dhoni was furious after losing to George Bailey’s team. Dhoni expressed his frustration in the dressing room and highlighted the missed opportunity to win. Raina highlighted his memorable innings of 87 runs from 25 balls but regretted not being able to chase down the target of 227 and credit Virеndеr Sеhwag’s excellent century for PBKS.

Clarifying the controversy: Raina’s withdrawal from IPL 2020

Addressing the controversy surrounding his withdrawal from IPL 2020, Raina clarified that he left the tournament due to personal reasons including a family tragedy and not due to a hotel room issue as rumoured. He emphasized the importance of family in difficult times and acknowledged the challenges of the bio-bubble environment during the pandemic.

Raina also mentioned the IPL 2013 spot-fixing scandal and stated that players were unaware of the details highlighting the strong anti-corruption measures in Indian cricket. He reflected on CSK’s suspension and subsequent comeback, highlighting the team’s resilience and success upon its return to the competition. After retiring after IPL 2021, Raina has remained connected to the game through commentary and participation in local T20 competitions, including the Indian Veterans Premier League.
